Curling Event Draws People to the House

In an inclusive initiative by Better Together Friends, a recent curling event unfolded with a unique twist – individuals with disabilities taking center stage to learn and enjoy the sport for the first time. This event not only showcased the power of inclusivity, but also demonstrated how sports can break down barriers and bring people together.

Held at the Stevens Point Curling Club, the event was organized with the goal of introducing persons with disabilities to the intricacies and joys of curling. ODC’s Better Together Community Life Developer, Sami Szynskie, worked to ensure that the event was accessible and tailored to the diverse needs of participants.

Curling instructors were on hand to guide and support the newcomers through the basics of the game, ensuring a positive and empowering experience for everyone involved.

An enthusiastic group of participants, each brought their unique energy and determination to the ice. Laughter echoed through the rink as participants navigated the intricacies of sliding stones, sweeping, and strategic gameplay. What became apparent was the sheer joy and camaraderie that transcended any perceived limitations – a true testament to the transformative power of sports.

As the day unfolded, friendships blossomed, and a sense of accomplishment filled the air. Participants, many of whom had never considered curling as an option before, discovered not only a new sport but also a supportive community that embraced diversity and encouraged personal growth.

The event received overwhelming positive feedback from both participants and volunteers. It served as a reminder that sports have the ability to unite people of all abilities, fostering an environment of understanding, respect, and shared passion. The success of this curling event for persons with disabilities has paved the way for future inclusive sports activities in the Stevens Point area and the hope to plan more like it.
